The Book of Abraham
This is only a brief description of the text.
1. Youth in Chaldea and the Altar Scene
- Idolatry in Ur: The narrative begins with the protagonist describing his father's house and the surrounding community turning away from ancestral righteousness to worship false gods, including Elkenah, Libnah, Mahmackrah, Korashah, and the god of Pharaoh, upon altars built in the land of Ur.
- The Attempted Sacrifice: Because he refused to bow to these idols, the priests of Elkenah bound him upon an altar erected on the hill of Potiphar's Covenant to offer him as a human sacrifice.
- Divine Deliverance: As the sacrifice was prepared, he cried out to the Lord. A divine voice answered, and a messenger intervened, breaking his bonds, destroying the altar, and striking dead the officiating priest and surrounding idols amidst thunder and lightning.
2. Visions of the Celestials
- The Urim and Thummim: While residing in Chaldea, he receives a vision through the Urim and Thummim, observing the stars and the vast expansion of the universe.
- Kolob: The text introduces Kolob as the first creation, situated nearest to the dwelling place of God, governing all other creations of the same order. It describes how one revolution of Kolob equals a thousand years of earth time.
- Hierarchies of Order: The vision reveals that there are governing celestials of various magnitudes, with some standing nearer to God than others, and that each sphere moves in its appointed time and order to give light to those revolving around it.
3. Premortal Existence and Creation
- Intelligences Before the World: The text states that before the physical earth was made, spiritual entities or "intelligences" existed. Among these were noble and great ones appointed as rulers and leaders.
- Council in Heaven: A governing deity declares an intention to make an earth where these beings might dwell, proposing to prove them by seeing if they will do all things commanded.
- Organization of the Earth: Creators descend to organize the unorganized matter of the universe, dividing light from darkness, forming dry land, and populating the world with plant and animal life, culminating in the placement of humanity.
