HEBREW GOSPEL OF MATTHEW - CHAPTER 17

Note on Textual Divisions & Concordance Markers: The section titles (פרק ראשון, פרק שני, etc.) follow the authentic internal layout of Shem-Tob's Hebrew text, which organizes the Gospel of Matthew into 116 structural pericopes. The traditional 28-chapter and verse divisions ([MT X:X–X]) did not exist in ancient manuscripts; they were devised centuries later by Western scholars (Stephen Langton in 1205 and Robert Estienne in 1551) to build Latin concordances. The standard chapter/verse citations are included in brackets solely as a concordance reference for readers navigating standard printed Bibles.

CHAPTER 5 (Part 4) — Section 017 [MT 5:27–30]

The Outside Spiritual Guide, The Gouged Eye, and Severing False Counsel

# Shem-Tob Hebrew Text (פרק י״ז) Literal Translation
5:27 עוֹד אָמַר לָהֶם שְׁמַעְתֶּם מַה שֶּׁנֶּאֱמַר לַקַּדְמוֹנִים לֹא תִנְאָף׃ Again he said to them: You have heard what was said to the ancients, "You shall not commit adultery."
And I say to you that everyone who sees a woman and covets her [sets his calculated appetite to take her] has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
5:29 וְאִם יוֹסִיתְךָ עֵינֶיךָ הַיְמִין נְקֹר אוֹתָהּ וְתַשְׁלִיכָהּ מִמְּךָ׃ And if your right eye entices you [if the spiritual guide outside of you seduces you into apostasy], gouge it out and cast it from you.
And likewise if your hand entices you [executing what that outside counsel incites], cut it off: it is better for you to lose one of your members than all your body in Gehenna [the place of complete destruction].
Warning on Decontextualized & Abridged Readings: Western traditions often reduce this passage to fleeting sexual thoughts, detaching it completely from the Torah. When severed from the Tenth Word ("You shall not covet"), teachers treat the eye as a passive biological tripwire—burdening the innocent with guilt for mere human sight. But in the Hebrew, Yeshu is addressing the seductive authority of an outside spiritual counselor who leads you to break covenant. When an external guide—your "right eye"—whispers permissions to take what is not yours, following that voice instead of the Spirit of God within will drag your whole walk into ruin.

The "Right Eye": Your Outside Spiritual Adviser (Root ס-ו-ת)

In ancient Semitic and biblical idiom, the leader, elder, or seer who directs your vision is called your "eye" (as in Job 29:15: "I was eyes to the blind", and Numbers 10:31: "you may be to us instead of eyes"). The "right eye" represents your primary, exalted spiritual adviser outside of yourself—the external teacher, counselor, or authority whose vision you adopt to navigate your life.

[In simple words: The "right eye" is not just an eyeball in your skull. It is that external spiritual director or trusted voice outside of you whom you let guide your steps, listening to their persuasive voice instead of obeying the Spirit of God placed inside you.]

The Hebrew verb on the parchment is יוֹסִיתְךָ (yositkha — "it entices / seduces you"). In Deuteronomy 13:6, this is the exact legal term for an outside companion or teacher secretly enticing you: "If your brother... or your friend, which is as your own soul, entice you secretly [יְסִיתְךָ, yesitkha], saying, Let us go and serve other gods..."

When this outside adviser begins justifying covetousness, excusing covenant betrayal, or teaching you to seize what belongs to another, they have become an enticer.

Boring Out the Eye (נְקֹר - Neqor): Yeshu commands: נְקֹר אוֹתָהּ (neqor otah — "gouge it out / bore it out"). This is the exact root used when the Philistines bored out Samson's eyes (Judges 16:21), and when Nahash demanded the gouging of every right eye (1 Samuel 11:2) to disarm the fighting men of Israel.

[In simple words: If a trusted outside spiritual guide or mentor starts feeding you advice that violates God's covenant, do not politely entertain them. Radically gouge out that relationship. Sever that outside voice completely, rather than letting their seductive counsel drag your entire walk into the fire of Gehenna.]

Paleographic & Textual Foundations (Explained Simply)

  • The Outside Voice Meets the Tenth Word (חָמוּד - Chamud): Verse 28 warns against וַיַּחְמוֹד אוֹתָהּ (vayachmod otah — "and covets her"). False outside spiritual guides often legitimize coveting, telling men they are "entitled" to another's spouse, station, or goods under spiritual pretexts.
[In simple terms: Beware of any outside teacher who gives you spiritual excuses to take or covet what belongs to another household.]
  • The Secret Planning Room (בִּלְבָבוֹ - Bilvavo): Manuscripts B, D, E, F, G, and H read בִּלְבָבוֹ (bilvavo — "in his inner heart/mind"). When you listen to the outside enticer, their toxic seed takes root in the private drafting room of your will.
[In simple terms: What enters through the outside adviser's words settles into your mind, becoming an internal conspiracy before the hands ever act.]
  • The Hand That Grasps (יָדְךָ - Yadkha): In verse 30, the hand executes what the outside eye pointed out. The outside spiritual adviser scopes the target, rationalizes the theft, and then your own hand reaches out to seize it.
[In simple terms: Cut off the connection between the corrupt outside guide and your own actions before your hands commit covenant treason.]
  • Perishing in Gehenna (מַשֶּׁיֹּאבַד - Mashe-yovad): Witnesses A, B, D, E, F, and G add mashe-yovad ("than that your whole body should perish / be wiped out"). Following the deceptive counsel of a worldly or religious guide outside of you ends not merely in earthly trouble, but in the total obliteration of your covenant inheritance.
[In simple terms: No charismatic spiritual leader is worth losing your soul over. Cut off the false guide to preserve your life before God.]
