HEBREW GOSPEL OF MATTHEW - CHAPTER 1

CHAPTER 1 — Section 001 [MT 1:1–17]

פרק ראשון
Note on Textual Divisions & Concordance Markers
The section titles (פרק ראשון, פרק שני, etc.) follow the authentic internal layout of Shem-Tob's Hebrew text, which organizes the Gospel of Matthew into 116 structural pericopes. The traditional 28-chapter and verse divisions ([MT 1:1–17]) did not exist in ancient manuscripts; they were devised centuries later by Western scholars (Stephen Langton in 1205 and Robert Estienne in 1551) to build Latin concordances. The standard chapter/verse citations are included in brackets solely as a concordance reference for readers navigating standard printed Bibles.

Consonantal & Paleographic Notes

  • Consonantal Form יש״ו (Yeshu): The unvocalized text reads explicitly Yod-Shin-Vav (יש״ו) marked with double primes. There is no letter Ayin (ע) on the parchment. It is rendered directly as Yeshu.
  • פרק ראשון (First Section): Designates the beginning of the 116 internal sections of Shem-Tob's text, completely distinct from the 28 chapters introduced in 13th-century Latin Bibles.
  • Verse 6 (אשת שלמה): Reads literally "David begat the wife of Solomon from the wife of Uriah" without emendation or bracketed additions.
  • Verses 13–14 (Scribal Practice of Lineage Structuring & Omission): Verse 13 pauses with "and Avihud begat..." (ואביהוד הוליד את...) and verse 14 resumes with אקים ואקים הוליד. In ancient Hebrew scribal tradition, genealogical omission is an established practice. Lineages in the Tanakh routinely omit generations—such as Ezra 7:1–5 skipping six high priests recorded in 1 Chronicles 6, or verse 8 of this very chapter bypassing Ahaziah, Joash, and Amaziah between Yoram and Uziyah to fit the structural pattern. The text presents the ancestral chain as transmitted on the parchment without adding names to force a modern artificial chronology.
  • Verse 16 (איש מר״ים): Rendered literally as "man of Miryam" rather than an institutional legal title.
  • Verse 16 (בלעז & קריס״טוס — Linguistic & Cultural Boundary): The text identifies him from within the lineage as משיח (Mashiach, "Anointed"), then adds ובלעז קריס״טוס. The root לעז (lo'ez) carries the connotation of outsider or foreign vernacular speech (as in Psalm 114:1). In Semitic thought, this phrasing marks a cognitive and cultural boundary: it notes that while his direct identity within the line is Mashiach, "that is their outside perception / that is what the nations call him" (Christos). The Greek title is transcribed into Hebrew letters utilizing two instances of the enclosed letter Samekh (ס) alongside Tet (ט).
  • Verse 17 (The Opening Scribal Parenthesis): Verse 17 opens with an isolated parenthesis (וכל תולדות... that does not close at the end of this verse. Instead, it bridges into Section 2, closing at the rubric phrase in MT 1:18 (בזה האופן)). This structural bracket walls off the 3×14 numerical tally and introductory premise as an editorial aside to the reader, stating in effect: "this is their genealogical tally and asserted manner of birth."
  • Verse 17 (י״ד = 14): The count of 14 generations is recorded using alphanumeric letters: Yod (10) + Dalet (4) with scribal primes (י״ד), stated three times.
